CHICAGO (WLS) — The House Education and Workforce Committee has launched an investigation into another Chicago-area higher education institution over allegations of antisemitism on campus.

According to a letter addressed to the chancellor and executive dean of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, the committee said it was made aware that “Jewish students are experiencing hostility and fear at the university, and it has not been demonstrated that the university has meaningfully responded to address and mitigate this problem.”

The letter to university officials detailing several examples of alleged incidents that took place on campus contributing a possible hostile environment against Jewish students, including allegations of students posting “hateful messages of misinformation” to the College of Medicine’s Slack channel.

Another example including allegations a that a College of Medicine surgeon posted online “comparing Israel to the Islamic State and repeatedly comparing Israelis to the Nazis.”

Now, the committee is requesting the school provide documentation detailing the institution’s response to the complaints.

The Illinois school was one of three medical schools to receive a letter from the Congressional committee. Two other letters were sent to UCLA and UCSF in California.

The University of Illinois College of Medicine is now the third Chicago institution to face federal accusations after the presidents of DePaul and Northwestern were asked to testify before Congress after receiving similar letters.

ABC7 reached out to the University of Illinois College of Medicine and did not immediately receive a response.
