House Ethics Committee Launches Probe into Sexual Misconduct Claims Against California Rep. Eric Swalwell

WASHINGTON — The House Ethics Committee has launched an inquiry to determine if Representative Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from California, has been involved in any sexual misconduct directed at an employee under his supervision. This announcement was made public on Monday, stirring significant political attention.

This development follows closely on the heels of Swalwell’s decision to suspend his campaign for the California governor race. The suspension was announced a day after allegations against him surfaced, allegations that Swalwell has consistently denied.

In the wake of these accusations, which include claims of sexual assault on two separate occasions involving a former employee, Swalwell’s support among Democrats dwindled rapidly. The allegations, initially reported by the San Francisco Chronicle and subsequently covered by CNN, emerged just as Swalwell was gaining traction in the highly competitive gubernatorial race.

Swalwell addressed the situation through a social media post, stating, “I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made – but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.” His statement underscores his intention to personally contest the accusations while acknowledging the impact on his political aspirations.

It is important to note that the Ethics Committee has clarified that its decision to investigate and publicly announce the review of these allegations does not imply any wrongdoing on Swalwell’s part. The investigation is a procedural step in response to the serious nature of the claims.

The announcement of the investigation comes as a growing number of lawmakers, from both political parties, have called on Swalwell to resign from Congress. Conversations have even moved toward a potential House vote to expel the congressman, but no floor action has been scheduled.

The Ethics panel’s decision to launch its own probe could potentially stall, for now, any other immediate action in Congress.
