Why Rick Pitino is perfect coach for improbable St. John's season

It’s hard to believe at first glance. The fact that St. John’s is listed among the top 10 college basketball teams in the country seems almost unbelievable. At the beginning of the season, no one would have predicted such a high ranking for the school. It would have seemed more likely that this recognition belonged to a different era, a time long past and unlikely to make a comeback, much like Ebbets Field.

However, as of Monday, St. John’s has climbed even higher in the rankings, now sitting at No. 7 in the latest AP poll. This is their best ranking since December 2, 1991, marking a significant achievement for the team. Moreover, they have managed to stay in the top 10 for three consecutive weeks, a feat they have not accomplished in 26 years.

The Red Storm, with a record of 24-4, have only suffered one defeat in 2025. Their most recent victory, a strong performance against UConn, the two-time defending national champions, demonstrated their potential. By securing a season-sweep against UConn, St. John’s has put themselves in a great position to clinch their first undisputed Big East title since 1985.

It’s almost impossible to believe this is the same program that suffered through six seasons of Norm Roberts, through the false promise of Steve Lavin, through the misguided nostalgia of Chris Mullin, through the uninspired tenure of Mike Anderson.
