The retrial of Karen Read is ongoing, with the jury starting their second full day of deliberations on the murder charges related to the death of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, a police officer.

Read is a former analyst and adjunct professor from Massachusetts who stands accused of fatally striking O’Keefe with her car the night of Jan. 28, 2022. The couple were out drinking that evening when they were invited to the home of O’Keefe’s colleague, Boston Police Sgt. Brian Albert. Read drove O’Keefe to Albert’s home but did not go inside.

O’Keefe was then found unresponsive the next morning outside of Albert’s home from a combination of hypothermia and blunt-force trauma.

Prosecutors claim Read and O’Keefe had been arguing that evening and accuse her of striking him with her Lexus SUV and driving away. But Read’s defense team believe O’Keefe was beaten up inside of Sgt. Albert’s home, attacked by his dog, and left outside.

Read’s lawyers claimed she is being framed by the Boston police department as a cover-up. She is currently facing charges of second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death.

Read was first tried in 2024 but the case ended in a mistrial when the jury remained deadlock after over 26 hours of deliberation, per The Washington Post. The jury has now been deliberating for over nine hours.

The case has garnered national attention and attracted crowds at the Massachusetts courthouse as the second trial continues underway. But viewers can also tune into the trial live from their homes.
