Hyundai, Kia recall 147K EVs over charging issue

In a recent announcement, Hyundai has issued a recall affecting nearly 84,000 Genesis vehicles due to a critical software error. This malfunction, identified in the audio-video navigation system, poses a significant safety risk as it can lead to the dashboard display failing while the vehicle is in motion, potentially increasing the likelihood of an accident.

On January 16, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a recall notice concerning specific 2025 and 2026 Genesis models. The affected lineup includes the G80, GV80, GV60, GV70, and their electric counterparts, the G80 and GV70 EVs. The software glitch could disable vital dashboard functions, depriving drivers of essential information like fuel levels and speedometer readings, which are crucial for safe driving.

This defect represents a breach of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 101, which requires that vehicle controls and displays provide drivers with necessary operational data to maintain safety on the road.

In response to this issue, Hyundai advises Genesis owners to temporarily disable their HD radio feature until a comprehensive solution is in place. The resolution will involve a software update to the audio-video navigation system. Genesis intends to implement this fix via an over-the-air update, ensuring a seamless process for vehicle owners. Alternatively, owners can visit their local dealerships, where technicians will inspect the system and apply the update at no cost.

Hyundai is advising owners to disable HD radio until a permanent fix can be applied. The remedy will involve updating the audio-video navigation software, which Genesis plans to deliver through an over-the-air update. Dealerships can also inspect and issue the update free of charge.

The company will begin mailing notification letters to affected vehicle owners Mar. 16. Genesis customers with concerns can contact customer service at 844-340-9741 and reference recall number 031G.

Hyundai has received 237 reports related to the defect, dating from Sept. 26, 2024, until Jan. 2. There are no confirmed crashes, fires, injuries or deaths related to the recall, according to the notice. The recall number is 26V019000.
