CHICAGO (WLS) — The Illinois Lottery had a free Powerball Ticket Grab Wednesday. The event was timed with Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing, which is worth $1.4 billion.
The employees at a BP gas station in Hyde Park said they had a line out the door all day long as people continued to try their luck and see if they’re the winner of the big jackpot. The odds are about one in 232 million, but the people said you just have to play to win.

It’s the fifth largest jackpot in Powerball history.
“It’s a big jackpot I don’t usually play but I’m gonna try tonight,” Powerball player Ralph Allensaid.
It had people running to their nearby gas stations and convenience stores in hopes of coming away with generational wealth.
“I play every now and then, and tonight I thought I’d give it a shot because I feel lucky,” Powerball player Mildred Dixonsaid.

The Illinois Lottery’s Grab Machine was set up at the Hyde Park Station and Car Wash on South Lake Park Avenue. Participants got a few seconds to grab as many tickets as they could, with more than 1,000 Powerball tickets up for grabs.
“I tell you what: I have had a lot of rainy days. So therefore, I will spend it,” Powerball player Michael Scott said.
The business’ owners said it’s one of the luckier places to buy a winning lottery ticket, and plenty of people were playing to win.
“To help my friends and neighbors first and then to go to New Zealand,” Powerball player Patricia Wheeler said. “I always wanted to go to New Zealand.”
There was a lot of excitement in the area.
A Des Plaines Speedway on Touhy Avenue was the gas station that sold the Mega Millions winning ticket back in 2022. That jackpot was also north of a billion dollars.
Some are saying it’s the luckiest store in the state, and its reputation precedes it.
On Labor Day, they sold more than $10,000 in Powerball tickets, and they expect to easily clear that number Wednesday, as the anticipation for another drawing builds.
One man who bought tickets there said he drove 90 minutes round trip.
“I know that this was one of the locations that won the billion dollars in 2022,” Powerball player Wayne Lake said.
“Where else can you spend two bucks and win this kind of money?” Powerball player Glenn Anderson said.
“I don’t know, but I’m not planning on going to work tomorrow. That’s all that matters,” Powerball player Brian Maluga said.
Since the Powerball lottery was created in 1992, there has only been two winners of the big jackpot in the state of Illinois. The last winner came in 2013, but that’s not stopping people from buying their tickets.
“You have to go through the force you can’t get on the other side without going through, so I’m winning this thing tonight,” Powerball player Donald Conley said.
The estimated cash value of the Powerball jackpot is just over $634 million.
Powerball tickets are $2 each. All participants must be 18 years old or older.
