BLOOMINGTON, Ind. An Indiana University fraternity has been ordered to shutter its operations for the next three years.

A memo obtained by FOX59/CBS4 indicates the Lambda Chapter of Sigma Chi was instructed to cease all of its operations until the Fall 2028 semester. Indiana University issued the suspension following a hazing investigation.

Sigma Chi received a Cease and Desist Order related to hazing in November 2024. The Cease and Desist Order was related to one specific incident.

After a further investigation of that incident, IU determined hazing was systemic, dangerous and egregious within the Lambda Chapter of Sigma Chi.

The memo FOX59/CBS4 obtained also indicated that hazing activities at the Sigma Chi house continued after IU gave the Lambda Chapter a Cease and Desist Order. Per the memo, members of the Lambda Chapter of Sigma Chi even took steps to conceal their hazing from the university.

The memo also indicates that IU sought to suspend Sigma Chi for five years, but the institution ultimately settled on a three-year suspension. All current undergraduate Sigma Chi brothers will have graduated by the time the Lambda Chapter’s suspension has ended.

The memo did not contain commentary on specific incidents of hazing that allegedly happened at the Sigma Chi house.

Per the memo, the Lambda Chapter of Sigma Chi does not currently plan to reopen its house in Bloomington until sometime in 2029.
