BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A detainee at the Jefferson County Jail has passed away following transport to a hospital due to what officials describe as a “suspected medical incident” earlier this week.
Jonathan Tremaine Maul, a 39-year-old resident of Birmingham, reportedly experienced a health emergency inside his cell around 4:51 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. He was subsequently taken to UAB Hospital, where he was declared deceased at 6:11 p.m. that evening.
Records from the jail reveal that Maul was incarcerated on April 27 due to a warrant connected to his failure to appear in court for third-degree burglary charges. Court documents indicate that Maul was initially apprehended on July 6, 2022, for allegedly breaking into an empty WingOut Express on Avenue V with the intention of theft. An indictment was issued against him on September 12, 2025.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office mentioned that an autopsy was scheduled for Thursday to ascertain the exact cause of Maul’s death, although preliminary findings show no evidence of trauma or foul play.
The matter is currently under investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
