David Wayne King, 41, died two days after he was found unresponsive in his jail cell.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit is investigating after a 41-year-old Duval County Jail inmate was found unresponsive and died two days later.

David Wayne King was found unresponsive in his cell on Thursday. Jail staff provided medical care until the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department took him to a local hospital.

King was admitted to the hospital and died there Saturday.

The cold case unit is investigating the circumstances leading up to King’s death. There were no use of force incidents involving him, or other inmates, before his death, JSO said.

The Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating his cause of death.

King was arrested in March 2025, accused of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
