Michigan announced the hiring of Whittingham, the former coach of Utah, on Friday. He steps in to fill the position left vacant by Sherrone Moore, who was dismissed earlier this month following legal issues.

The university cited “credible evidence” of Moore’s improper relationship with a staff member as the reason behind his termination.

After he was fired, he was arrested after allegedly breaking into the staffer’s home and threatening to kill himself.

He was subsequently charged with home invasion, stalking and breaking and entering.

Whittingham, 66, was in charge at Utah for 22 years, recording a 177-88 overall record along with an 11-6 record in bowl games.

Michigan will play Texas in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.

Biff Poggi has been serving as Michigan’s interim coach since Moore’s firing.

“Michigan Football is in GREAT hands under Kyle Whittingham !!!! Proven winner, true gentleman, tough nosed Michigan coach of days gone by,” Poggi posted on X on Friday. “Great hire by (athletic director) Warde Manuel. The kids will love him. Exciting days ahead for Michigan.

“We have work to do over next five days. Texas is excellent. GoBlue.”
