Inside Scoop: Navigating the Illinois Primary Election in Chicago

CHICAGO — Voters in Illinois are heading to the polls this Tuesday for the primary elections, where several significant races are set to reshape the state’s political landscape. Notably, Illinois is witnessing an open race for a U.S. Senate seat for the first time since 2010, following the retirement of long-serving Democrat Dick Durbin.

In addition to the Senate race, five U.S. House seats in the Chicago area are up for grabs, largely because current incumbents are vying for the Senate position. This scenario is expected to bring substantial changes to Illinois’ Congressional delegation.

Stephen Maynard Caliendo, a Political Science professor at North Central College, commented on the situation, stating, “It’s remarkable and quite unique for Illinois due to the open Senate seat, which has subsequently led to numerous House races being contested. This trend of retirements is also notable across the country.”

Alvin Tillery, a Political Science professor from Northwestern University, describes this period as a “generational shift” as baby boomers retire and younger generations like Gen X and Millennials begin to take on more prominent roles in the electorate. “These generations are more progressive,” Tillery explains. “The Democratic base is increasingly aligning to the left of both the donor and elected classes. Many younger candidates are stepping forward, driven by dissatisfaction with the older generations’ political strategies.”

Though President Donald Trump isn’t on the ballot, Caliendo observes, “This election serves as a referendum on the current administration. Historically, incumbents tend to lose House seats during midterm elections.” Additionally, Illinois voters will decide on their choices for the state’s governor.

JB Pritzker is running for a third term. Four Republicans are competing to take him on in November. They’re former State Senator and 2022 GOP nominee, Darren Bailey, Ted Dabrowski, former President of the media outlet Wirepoints, Dupage County Sheriff James Mendrick and businessman Rick Heidner.

“I think part of what the Republicans will run on is whether or not he plans to be governor for four years,” says Caliendo, referring to the possibility that Pritzker may run for President. “There are presidential ambitions there that have not been hidden. And that will be part of the discussion as well.”
