What we learned from Jets' Week 15 loss: How to fix this defense

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The New York Jets suffered a significant defeat at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars, losing 48-20 on Sunday. This defeat leaves them with a 3-11 record. Here are some insights and reflections from the game:

The decline of the Jets’ defense has been nothing short of astonishing. Once a formidable force in 2022 and 2023, the unit regressed to mediocrity in 2024 and has now plummeted to a subpar level in 2025. While it’s easy to point fingers at Steve Wilks, the blame cannot solely rest on him. The issues are rooted in a lack of talent across all defensive positions.

The responsibility now lies with General Manager Darren Mougey and Head Coach Aaron Glenn to address these shortcomings in the upcoming offseason. However, their task is daunting, and it’s clear that Fernando Mendoza won’t be stepping in as a linebacker anytime soon.

The most pressing need is to revitalize the pass rush. Despite having two first-round picks dedicated to edge rushers, Jermaine Johnson and Will McDonald have not made the anticipated impact this season. The Jets must seek an additional rusher to complement the group, reminiscent of the support they once had from Bryce Huff. On the interior, while Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs are serviceable for the 2026 season, there is a pressing need to inject youth into the lineup to secure the future.
