In a deeply unsettling incident that has rocked a small Utah community, the bodies of three women were discovered on Wednesday, triggering a wave of caution across the county. In response to this tragic event, the local school district made the prudent decision to cancel classes, while the sheriff’s department strongly advised residents to remain indoors and secure their homes.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office was first alerted by a call reporting the grim discovery of two deceased women along a hiking trail. As the day unfolded, authorities uncovered a third female victim during a subsequent investigation at a residence.
In terms of the victims’ identities, officials have revealed that the women spanned a range of ages, with one in her 30s, another in her 60s, and the eldest in her 80s. This tragic loss has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community, known for its tranquility.
Amid the unfolding investigation, local authorities have urged residents to exercise heightened vigilance and “take extra precautions” as they work to uncover the circumstances surrounding these deaths.
One woman was in her thirties, another was in her 60s and the third was in her 80s.
Officials alerted residents to “take extra precautions.”
“As this remains an active investigation, with the suspect at large, law enforcement is urging residents in the Torrey and surrounding area to take extra precautions, such as locking doors, remaining at home or with others, and being vigilant about surroundings,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The incident prompted surrounding counties to post to social media, warning residents. The Wayne County School District canceled Thursday and Friday classes “out of an abundance of caution for student and public safety.”
A representative with the FBI field office in Salt Lake City told affiliate KTVX, “We are aware of what’s being reported out of Wayne County and are prepared to assist our law enforcement partners, if requested.”
Wayne County is one of Utah’s least populated counties, with around 2,500 people.
The Utah Department of Public Safety, State Bureau of Investigation, and crime lab are assisting in the investigation.
Authorities are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a 2022 white Subaru Outback with license plate U560YF.
