() Pastor Lorenzo Sewell, who delivered a passionate inaugural prayer during President Donald Trump’s swearing-in ceremony Monday, says politics and spirituality are inseparable.

Sewell joined ” Now” to discuss the topic, contending there can be no spirituality without politics and vice versa.

“We need to equip all people to understand that the Bible is a political book,” Sewell said.

“If you take politics out of the Bible, you have no Bible. Look at King David. Jesus was crucified because he said that he was a king. It behooves us as spiritual leaders, it behooves us as great Americans to be able to be clear about our political positions,” he added.

Sewell reacted to Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde’s plea to President Trump during the inaugural prayer service to “help those who are fleeing war zones of persecution in their own lands to find compassion and welcome.”

The pastor of 180 Church in Detroit contended that Budde was “trying to superimpose her own political views into the text of Scripture.

“There is not one Latino that I know that we serve that agrees with people being over in our country illegally,” Sewell continued. “There is not one Latino that I know that’s in my community that says, ‘Pastor, it’s okay for people to be in this country that are here illegal.’ Not one.

“As a matter of fact, we have 28 Venezuelans right now in our church in Detroit that come there, that get resources, and those resources can’t go to people that are legally in this country. God has already been merciful these last four years, and it’s time for us to be willing to do what our law says.”
