Uber is enhancing the convenience of its ride-sharing service for travelers this holiday season by rolling out a new way to hail rides: physical kiosks.
These kiosks, first introduced in 2019 at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, are set to be installed at strategic locations across airports, hotels, and ports. This initiative, announced by Uber on Tuesday, primarily aims to assist international visitors arriving in the U.S. without a data plan, enabling them to order rides without needing the app.
The inaugural kiosk will be stationed at Terminal C of LaGuardia Airport. Equipped with a touchscreen and a credit card reader, it is designed for ease of use.
Users can simply approach the kiosk, input their destination, and choose their preferred ride type. Once the process is complete, the kiosk issues a paper receipt detailing the trip, ensuring a seamless experience for travelers.
Uber said travelers can walk up to the kiosk, enter their destination and then select their ride type. According to the announcement, the kiosk will print a paper receipt with the trip details.
This isn’t the first iteration of a physical Uber kiosk, as the company rolled out a similar initiative in 2019 at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.
Uber told Bloomberg in a statement that major events such as the World Cup next year “provide a strong opportunity” for the ridesharing company.
In addition to the kiosk, the company is also expanding its shuttle service.
Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey will now offer riders shuttle options. The expansion means “all major New York airports are now served by Uber’s airport Shuttle,” the company said in a news release.
The shuttle will have two fixed routes to and from the West Village and 42nd Street, offering pick-up and drop-off points along the way. The fares to and from Newark will be under $15 for a limited time, Uber said.
