AUBURN, Ala. (WRBL) – Authorities are investigating the death of a dog reportedly left unattended in a crate over the holiday break at an Auburn apartment complex.
Auburn police confirmed a report of animal abuse on Jan. 5 and are working alongside Auburn Animal Control to investigate the occurrence.
The case has drawn attention on social media after posts shared allegations about the incident. WRBL has been contacted by a handful of non-police sources who say a small husky was allegedly left in a crate by its owner, a Southern Union State Community College student near the end of 2024. One source said a roommate returned after the holiday break, found the dog dead in the crate, and contacted Auburn Animal Control.
The student’s name is being withheld as no charges had been filed as of Thursday morning, according to Auburn police.
Southern Union spokesperson Shondae Brown released the following statement on Thursday:
“We are deeply saddened by the death of the animal; however, since the incident did not occur on Southern Union property, the college will defer to the appropriate authorities for investigation and action.”
