JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man drowned in a retention pond on Jacksonville’s Southside Wednesday night after drinking alcohol, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

JSO Sergeant Robby Henson said patrol officers responded to the drowning at Bentley Green Apartment Homes, located at 8214 Princeton Square Blvd., at 11:50 p.m.

When they arrived, the man was found dead in the pond, as JSO’s dive team then responded and removed his body from the water, according to Henson.

“Thus far, the investigation has revealed the victim was consuming alcohol while on a video call with a family member,” Henson told First Coast News. “The victim decided to enter the pond while still on the call. When the family member lost sight of the victim, they contacted the victim’s roommate, who responded to the pond, but could not locate the victim.”

Henson said thereafter, the roommate contacted JSO. Detectives with JSO’s Crime Scene and Homicide Units are conducting an investigation into the incident; foul play is not suspected, however, the Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the man’s cause of death, Henson said.
