Charlotte pols' role in Iryna Zarutska's murder: Letters

The Issue: Charlotte politicians’ responses to a career criminal murdering Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska.

I am appalled by the lack of response from Charlotte’s officials and progressive politicians regarding the tragic murder of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, allegedly committed by repeat offender Decarlos Brown (“Psycho free to ‘kill’ in NC,” Sept. 9).

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles went as far as saying we can’t arrest our way out of crime. She is an insult to the intelligence of the public.

The politicians who allowed this to happen by passing lax laws should all be fired for negligence and incompetence.

The tragic killing of a Ukrainian refugee on a Charlotte train by a disturbed individual is horrifying. It’s imperative that we start ensuring accountability for the judges and psychiatrists who permit the release of these dangerous individuals.

An increasing number of people are falling victim to murder, assaults, and robberies, often by criminals who are permitted to reenter society and repeatedly commit these offenses.

I have only one question for Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes and other judges who have the ability to incarcerate a dangerous individual with a long rap sheet: How do you look in the mirror and not be completely ashamed of what you wrought on society?

Yet another young woman lost to a senseless act of violence, this time a girl who fled Ukraine for a better life. How many more murders have to happen?

One is too many, yet we don’t even hear thoughts and prayers from the Dems.

It’s their idiotic bail reforms — along with their tolerance for migrant criminals — that are to blame.

Charlotte City Council candidate Edwin Peacock seems to think the problem is people who ride the rails without paying. I don’t think that’s the reason; I think it’s the lunatics who remain free on bail.

How does the city of Charlotte explain this to Iryna’s family? Brown’s past release is beyond all comprehension.

Donna Skjeveland

Holbrook

Spoken like a true Democrat: Charlotte’s mayor says the horror that befell this Ukrainian woman on the train was the result of a mental-health crisis.

The murderer was arrested 14 times and released in each instance by judges who thought nothing of the consequences of their actions. That is a crisis that needs to be addressed throughout the country — enough is enough.

These radical judges must be voted out of office so that this poor woman will not have died in vain. If they are not, senseless and preventable murders like this will sadly happen again.

The tragic murder of Iryna Zarutska offers lessons on two fronts: One is that society should be encouraging young men like Daniel Penny to come to the aid of helpless victims, instead of charging them with crimes and making excuses for the criminals.

The second lesson— and this is directed specifically at Zohran Mamdani, who asked what the purpose of prisons are — is that jails must be utilized to keep individuals like Decarlos Brown away from innocents like Zarutska.

Sharon Wylie

Westport , Conn.

So, Mayor Lyles believes that “We will never arrest our way out [of] issues such as homelessness and mental health.”

The ones who are suffering from mental-health issues are politicians like her who think it’s perfectly acceptable for these people to be among us.

Stony Brook

I’m as angered and heartbroken as any normal person should be after hearing about this savage murder.

The victim, an immigrant from beleaguered Ukraine, must have felt secure and safe enough here in America not to pay attention to her immediate surroundings.

Herein lie the lessons: All politics aside, never take your safety in public settings for granted.
