Bangladesh cuts office hours and turns off wedding lights to save energy

In a bid to conserve energy amid the ongoing conflict in Iran, Bangladesh has decided to reduce operating hours for offices and shops, along with prohibiting decorative lighting at weddings.

The nation, which relies on imports for 95% of its oil and gas, predominantly from the Middle East, is striving to address concerns over potential disruptions in supply despite having sufficient reserves of petrol and diesel.

Currently, about 60% of Bangladesh’s electricity is produced using imported gas, whereas diesel plays a crucial role in regional agriculture.

Authorities in Dhaka have mandated that all government and private offices, along with banks, will close an hour earlier each day starting Friday, continuing until further notice.

Additionally, shopping centers accustomed to late hours must now close by 6 PM, though those retailing food supplies are allowed to maintain their regular operating schedule.

Decorative lighting, which was initially banned at malls, has now been extended to include weddings.
