In a dramatic turn of events, Iranian bombers nearly launched an attack on the largest US military base in the Middle East, but were thwarted by the Qatari Air Force just two minutes before impact, as per a recent report.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard flew SU-24 bombers towards al-Udeid Air Base, which hosts approximately 10,000 US personnel, before being intercepted by a Qatari F-15 jet and other military aircraft, reported CNN.

According to a source cited by the outlet, the SU-24 bombers were equipped with bombs and guided munitions.

The Iranian aircraft attempted to evade detection by descending to a mere 80 feet above the ground, prompting Qatar to swiftly mobilize its air fleet, the report detailed.

The incident concluded with the SU-24s being shot down over Qatari waters.

“Qatari fighters for the first time have shot down two Iranian bombers on route to their location,” Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters.

The Iranian air force is estimated to have approximately 20 Soviet and Russian-made Su-24s in its inventory.
