Will There Be A Season 2 of ‘Chief of War’?

The stars of Chief of War are already anticipating what could be another intense, battle-heavy season — despite Apple TV+ not officially renewing it yet.

“I love playing this character so much,” Luciane Buchanan, portraying queen consort Ka’ahumanu, told Deadline in September 2025. “So there’s definitely more to be explored, and I am crossing my fingers. But at this point, I have no idea what’s going to happen.”

The historical drama, which premiered in August 2025, dramatizes the actual events leading to the unification of the Hawaiian islands in the late 1700s, amid the looming threat of colonization. Jason Momoa co-created the series with Thomas Pa’a Sibbett and stars as Kaʻiana, a warrior and the first leader to depart the islands.

“I feel like this whole thing has chosen me in a way, like this is my destiny,” the Hawaiian native told People in July 2025. “I have no idea how I got to all this, but we’re here, and I’m very grateful. I’m living my dream doing what I love to do. To play my ancestors is such a responsibility. It’s scary and exciting.”

So… will Chief of War return for Season 2? Here’s what Momoa and the cast have revealed so far.

Will There Be A Season 2 of Chief of War?

Not yet. Apple TV+ hasn’t officially announced a renewal. Still, producers told Hawaiian News Now back in July that they expected to learn in September whether the streamer would move forward — not just with a Season 2, but possibly a Season 3 as well.

“We have a lot of fights to battle and to go through because it’s not our money making this, but you know, it’s a collaborative process,” Momoa explained.

From Limited Series to Multi-Season Plans:

Interestingly, Momoa revealed that Chief of War was first pitched as a limited series. But just before filming began, he and Sibbett shifted gears and began laying groundwork for future seasons — including the dramatic death of Kaʻiana’s brother, Nahi (Siua Ikaleʻo).

“We were like, ‘Man, we have to tell more. We have to open this [story] up,’ ” Momoa told The Hollywood Reporter in September 2025. “But when we changed the structure, we knew that Nahi was going to have to die.”

The choice, Momoa admitted, veered away from historical accuracy:

“Nahi didn’t die this way, but I knew for story [purposes], it was going to create the maximum amount of emotional impact that we need to carry us into the finale and then hopefully give us that draw for a season two,” he said. “We needed the family to lose something significant.”

Who Would Return for Season 2?

If Chief of War does move forward, fans can expect to see the surviving cast return — including Momoa and Buchanan. And according to Buchanan, there’s plenty of story left to tell.

“There’s so much to be explored,” she told Deadline. “I think anyone who watched the show and has dug into the history will know that there are many, many more battles and betrayal and different things that happen in order for Kamehameha to unite these kingdoms.”

What Has Jason Momoa Said About Season 2?

The Game of Thrones alum has been openly optimistic about the show’s future — and confident that fans want more.

“The show’s doing really well with critics, with fans,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I get so many compliments about it, and I haven’t [heard] any really bad things.”

Momoa added that the strong response in Hawaii, paired with Apple’s support, has him feeling good about renewal odds.

“Listen, if people really resonate with it, there’s so many possibilities of what can happen,” he said. “Next season, if there is one, oh, it’s all [coming] out, because this story is f—— huge, dude.”
