HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — Lawyers for the family of Jabari Peoples filed an amended petition adding the state bureau of investigation, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, as well as its director Christopher Inabinett.

In the original petition, attorney Leroy Maxwell requested that city of Homewood release body camera footage showing the shooting of Peoples, who was shot in the back by a police officer June 22. The department has claimed that Peoples had reached for a gun during an alleged altercation with the officer.

Now, Maxwell has added ALEA, the agency investigating the shooting. As of Friday, ALEA has not released the footage, claiming it would compromise its investigation.

“Mr. Inabinett failed to explain how a the bodycam footage by the family and their legal representative creates risks of contaminating witness testimony, contaminating or interfering with ALEA’s investigation, or interfering with the chain of custody,” Maxwell wrote.

The case remains under investigation.
