Plans for expanding sidewalk dining options in Downtown Jacksonville are gaining traction, with a particular focus on enhancing both pedestrian and traffic safety. The initiative, spearheaded by City Councilman Raul Arias, is set to transform the urban dining experience.

On October 13, Arias introduced a proposal aimed at allowing downtown eateries to offer outdoor seating along sidewalks. This move is designed to invigorate the area’s dining scene, providing patrons with an al fresco option while ensuring compliance with safety standards.

As of November 6, the ordinance is progressing smoothly through the legislative process. It has undergone a third reading and received unanimous approval from both the Neighborhoods and Community Services, Public Health and Safety Committee, and the Rules Committee. The next step is a city council vote scheduled for November 12.

This proposed ordinance not only covers the downtown area but also extends to Jacksonville’s Brooklyn neighborhood. All participating establishments would be required to adhere to specific guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of both diners and pedestrians.

The ordinance would extend through Jacksonville’s Brooklyn area, and would require all sidewalk dining to conform with traffic and pedestrian safety regulations.
