Yanira “Yaya” Cardona has returned to her role as the Hispanic Outreach Director, according to an announcement from the City of Jacksonville. Her reinstatement follows a brief administrative leave resulting from comments she made concerning the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the city.
In a statement released on Friday, the office of Mayor Deegan confirmed the conclusion of an internal review regarding Cardona’s situation. The statement read:
“The administrative review related to Ms. Yanira ‘Yaya’ Cardona has concluded, and she has resumed her duties as Hispanic Outreach Coordinator in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.”
The city emphasized its policy of not disclosing details on internal personnel matters but reaffirmed its dedication to serving Jacksonville’s residents with professionalism, transparency, and respect. Cardona’s return marks a continuation of her work in engaging with the Hispanic community, aligning with the city’s ongoing commitment to inclusive community outreach.
As practice, the City of Jacksonville does not elaborate on internal personnel matters. We remain committed to serving all residents of Jacksonville with professionalism, transparency, and respect.”
On Wednesday, January 14, Yanira “Yaya” Cardona hosted a livestream on Instagram. In that stream, she claimed that ICE was placing speed traps around the city, and stated that immigration officers have been seen on Emerson Street, Beach Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard.
Cardona added that authorities are targeting lawn care companies, A/C companies, and “construction vans,” with the intent to stop them to make sure they have their necessary paperwork.
“These are difficult times,” Cardona said during the live. “I know everyone wants to fight. Unfortunately, this isn’t the time to fight. If you get pulled over, as much as we want to huff and puff, please comply. If you have lawyers, please have your plan in place with your lawyers. If you have family, if you have kids, businesses, get a power of attorney to somebody you trust and love.”
Cardona was placed on administrative leave the following day while an internal review began. While addressing the media, Mayor Donna Deegan says that Cardona violated her office’s social media policy by posting the video during work hours at City Hall and without getting permission to do so; however, she claims that comment made were “not illegal.”
Criticism of the video was swift, with the Florida Republican Party calling on the mayor to hold Cardona accountable. Governor Ron DeSantis also commented on the video during a press conference.
“I know you had that one woman in the city of Jacksonville government putting out information. Look, that’s not the way we roll here in the state of Florida. We’re going to respect the law enforcement,” DeSantis said.
