Officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office used a Taser on a suspect before ultimately firing several shots, leading to his death.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office fatally shot a man suspected of driving a stolen vehicle on Tuesday night after a pursuit on foot, authorities reported.

The confrontation occurred on Kaleel Road, according to official statements.

The sequence of events began around 11:15 p.m. when Patrol Task Force officers, operating in unmarked vehicles, tracked down the suspect inside a “known stolen vehicle” near the intersection of 61st Street and Main Street.

Officials noted that two weeks earlier, the same individual had been spotted in the stolen vehicle. During that previous encounter, the suspect evaded officers and was reportedly armed with a firearm.

After the locating the stolen vehicle Tuesday, JSO said covert units called for marked patrol cars to follow the vehicle. Officers continued to follow the vehicle to Kaleel Road. Once there, JSO said the man “blacked out the stolen vehicle” and pulled into a driveway.

The man then exited the vehicle and ran away from the car, JSO said. As officers chased after him, Sergeant M. Howell reportedly deployed his Taser twice at the man. JSO said it is unknown at this time if the probes made contact with him.

After the Taser was deployed, JSO said the man pulled out a handgun, leading Sergeant Howell and Officer. M. Higginbotham to firing multiple shots.

According to JSO, the man died at the scene. The sheriff’s office has not yet released his identity due to his next of kin not yet being notified about his death.

This marks as the 4th officer-involved-shooting in 2026 for JSO. Once the State Attorney’s Office completes its investigation, JSO will conduct its own.
