In a significant development in a long-standing case, Gary Legg has pleaded guilty to manslaughter, six years after the tragic shooting of 19-year-old Courtney McCoy in Jacksonville.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The 26-year-old Legg admitted to the charge on Wednesday, marking a pivotal turn in the case that has lingered since the fatal incident on Labelle Street in 2019. At the time of the shooting, Legg and McCoy, along with several others, were present in the residence when McCoy was struck by a bullet in the torso.
Despite efforts to save her, McCoy succumbed to her injuries during surgery at the hospital, as reported by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Legg was taken into custody by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in January 2024. According to a statement released on social media, authorities concluded that Legg and McCoy had been together when the firearm Legg possessed accidentally discharged, leading to the young woman’s death.
JSO arrested Legg for the shooting in January 2024. In a social media post, the agency said it had determined Legg and the victim “were together at some point, and a firearm that was in the possession of the suspect discharged,” striking McCoy.
According to court records, his sentencing will be set on Nov. 3.
