The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said it appears the child found a gun and accidentally shot himself.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 2-year-old is dead after appearing to have accidentally shot himself on the city’s Westside Sunday evening, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police said around 7 p.m., officers responded to the 5800 block of Calvary Drive regarding a shooting. When they arrived, they located a 2-year-old suffering from a single gunshot wound.

Police said the child was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives with JSO’s Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit responded to conduct their respective investigations.

Police said it appears the child found a gun and accidentally shot himself. 

The parents of the child were taken to the Police Memorial Building for an interview. 

JSO is working with the Medical Examiner’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office on the investigation.

“We are very early in the investigation and many facts are unknown,” police said in a release on the incident.
