Gun locks are offered at all six of JSO’s substations, “no questions asked.” They prevent the gun from being loaded or fired.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is urging parents to take advantage of gun safety programs in the wake of the tragic death of a 2-year-old on the city’s Westside Sunday. JSO said at a press briefing that the toddler had discovered an unsecured gun and accidentally shot himself. He died from a single gunshot wound.

JSO is offering free gun locks at all six of their substations. The locks are cable locks, which thread through the gun to prevent it from being loaded or fired.

They also want to remind the public that they can purchase their own trigger locks or biometric safes.

JSO’s substation locations are:

District 1, serving Brooklyn, Downtown, the Eastside, San Marco & Springfield: 5258-12 Norwood Avenue in the Gateway Town Center

District 2, serving Arlington & Intracoastal West: 9119 Merrill Road in the Merrill Crossing shopping center

District 3, serving Mandarin & Southside: 8875 Liberty Ridge Drive, Suite 110, off Prominence Parkway

District 4, serving Avondale, Ortega & the Westside: 3726 Blanding Boulevard in the Cedar Hills Shopping Center

District 5, serving Baldwin, New Town, Northwest Jacksonville & Riverside: Located at Edward Waters (1767 Kings Road)

District 6, serving the Northside, San Mateo & Oceanway: 1680 Dunn Avenue, Suite 39 in Rutgers Plaza

The substations are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

JSO will provide the locks “no questions asked.”

They are also urging parents to talk to their children about gun safety and check out Project Childsafe to learn more.
