Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico faced a pointed challenge from a Catholic voter at a Texas town hall Wednesday after saying the Bible does not take a position on abortion.
Talarico, a Christian seminarian and state legislator, was responding to Jody Hunt, who described herself as a “one-issue voter.” He argued that his support for abortion rights could align with her religious beliefs because, in his view, “the Bible is silent on the issue of abortion.”
Hunt listened to Talarico’s explanation but did not accept his argument.
She let him finish his point that certain policy measures—short of banning abortion—could reduce the number of procedures nationwide before offering a forceful rebuttal.

“I just want to add that the Bible is not silent on abortion. There is the 10 Commandments: ‘Thou shall not kill,’” Hunt responded.
She continued, “And as Catholics, we take great insult, I guess sometimes, when it’s described that way.”
