MCHENRY, Ill. (WLS) — An 18-year old man accused of killing two teenagers in a deadly three-vehicle crash faced a judge in McHenry County on Tuesday.

Police say 18-year-old Jason Land was speeding south on Richmond Road in McHenry when he ran a red light and hit the vehicle carrying a 19-year old woman and 14-year-old boy early Monday morning.

Not even 48 hours after the crash happened, Land appeared in court in Woodstock.

A judge ruled that Land will remain in custody, denying him pre-trial release.

Prosecutors say Land was driving his 2006 Audi sedan and was intoxicated well above the legal limit when he ran a red light on Richmond Road and hit a 2015 Nissan Sentra at the intersection with McCullom Lake Road.

A third, parked vehicle was also hit, but no one was inside at the time.

The Nissan, meanwhile, was carrying two people, a 19-year-old woman and 14-year-old boy. Police say they were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office identified the woman as Perla Tejeda. Both Tejeda and the unnamed boy are from McCullom Lake.

In making his case for Land to be held in jail before the trial, the state’s attorney said Land has a speeding conviction in Ohio in April for driving more than 15 miles per hour over the speed limit, and his license is currently suspended in that state.

The state’s attorney also said Land could not tell police where he was coming from, where he was going, or what he was doing at the time of the crash.

Land now faces six criminal counts, including two felonies for Aggravated DUI Accident Causing a Death.

Land remains in custody of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. His next court appearance is set for Aug. 7.
