Joel Embiid will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee next week, the 76ers announced Wednesday afternoon.
The team made the decision after consulting medical experts. Further updates will be shared after the procedure is completed.
The idea behind the procedure is to reduce Embiid’s symptoms and make sure he can perform at a higher level, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.

Although no specific timeline was provided by the 76ers, ESPN stated that Embiid will undergo a re-evaluation in six weeks and is anticipated to fully recover.
Embiid, aged 31, was sidelined for the rest of the season at the end of February due to a persistent knee problem. Both the team and the player have consulted with medical professionals to determine the most suitable treatment plan.
“After further evaluation, it has been determined that he is medically unable to play and will miss the remainder of the season to focus on treatment and rehabilitation,” the team said in a statement in February.
Embiid played in just 19 games during the 2024-25 season and averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists while shooting 44.4 percent from the field.
The 2022-23 MVP will undergo his second surgery on his left knee in a little more than a year after he tore the meniscus in the same knee last year, which limited him to 39 games.

Philadelphia’s season is all but over at this point, with the team having dropped nine straight games after a loss to the Knicks on Tuesday, moving the 76ers to 23-53.
Embiid had been named to seven straight All-Star games prior to this season.
