WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — On a visit from Baltimore to the Giants’ camp, John Harbaugh introduced a unique element to their uniforms.
Players now proudly display special patches on the left side of their jerseys, celebrating individual achievements and milestones—a tradition Harbaugh initiated back in 2008, during his debut year coaching the Ravens.
“These patches are a sort of tribute, akin to military award medals,” Harbaugh explained after Thursday’s practice session.
Left tackle Andrew Thomas, for instance, adorned his patch with two distinctive symbols. A sword marks his participation in a Giants playoff game, while a powerful arm clutching a Giants hammer alongside a red star commemorates his involvement in the spring workout program.
“As the season progresses, you’ll notice additional icons,” Harbaugh teased, indicating that achievements like Pro Bowl selections and various game awards would be featured on the patches.
Jaxson Dart completed his first 10 passes in the team periods Wednesday as the offense dominated on Day 1.
This was not the case for the second practice of training camp, as the completions were more difficult to attain and the pressure up front was ramped up on defense.
After a quiet first day, WR Darnell Mooney hauled in a deep floater from Dart for a touchdown. … A hard count by Dart got RT Jermaine Eluemunor to jump offside, much to the delight of OLB Brian Burns, who did a little dance in the backfield. … Rookie Dominic Zvada hit a 57-yard field goal on the final play of practice.
Safety Jevón Holland was born in British Columbia, Canada, and went to college at Oregon, meaning he appreciates all the greenery from the Allegheny Mountains surrounding the practice fields at The Greenbrier Sports Performance Center.
“It’s fun,’’ he said. “I like being near trees and whatnot. Trees are my friend. I love it. So, I’m enjoying the atmosphere.’’
Holland, though, is skeptical about venturing out after dark, apparently buying into local myths.
“I heard about the Appalachian Mountains, Skinwalkers,’’ Holland said. “I’m a bit of a conspiracy theorist. I asked the bus driver. I was like, ‘You heard about Skinwalkers?’ He was like, ‘I just let it go in one ear and out the other.’ So, that’s all I needed to know — not to go out at night.’’
