Police said James Antonio Hunter, 45, committed a home invasion robbery and shot two people in the head four days before the murder of 33-year-old Sierra McKenzie.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man is facing multiple charges in connection with the murder of a Jacksonville woman last month and an unrelated double shooting during a home invasion robbery days earlier, according to a statement released by police Monday.

James Antonio Hunter, 45, faces a murder charge in the shooting death of 33-year-old Sierra McKenzie, whose body was found in a pool of blood on a sidewalk in the College Gardens area, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

On Jan. 23, officers responded to a home on College Circle South, where they found McKenzie’s body. The Medical Examiner’s Office determined she died from a gunshot wound.

Earlier this month, police said Hunter was taken into custody by the U.S. Task Force for two outstanding warrants. JSO homicide detectives found evidence at the scene of McKenzie’s murder connecting Hunter to the crime, the release said.

“Investigators used our cutting-edge technology to not only arrest him for McKenzie’s murder but link him to other crimes,” the release states.

Hunter also faces charges in connection with a double shooting that took place during a home invasion robbery on Main Street just four days before McKensize’s murder, according to police.

JSO’s Robbery and Violent Crime Unit detectives charged Hunter with shooting two people in the head during the incident on Jan. 19. Both victims survived the double shooting.

Jail records show Hunter faces several charges in separate cases, including second-degree murder, two counts of attempting murder in the second-degree, home invasion robbery with a firearm or deadly weapon and multiple counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

“We will continue to use every resource possible to catch killers, reduce violence, and bring families justice,” JSO said.

First Coast News spoke with McKenzie’s daughter, Kamya Cockfield, following her mother’s murder. She described her mother as her best friend who was kind, happy and outgoing.

“If we get justice, get peace, I feel like we’ll be OK,” Cockfield told First Coast News. “Everyone comes together as one and to be part of the family and the Black community, I feel like everybody should be good, everybody hold hands, pray, bow down and do good.”

Hunter is being held at the Duval County Jail on no bond.
