Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrests two men for murder after another man was found dead inside a burnt car in 2023.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two men were arrested by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for the murder of a 33-year-old man found dead inside a burnt vehicle in 2023, the agency announced Wednesday.

Officers said they found Edwin Mack dead inside a burnt car on Lenox Avenue on May 20, 2023. After reviewing the evidence, JSO said detectives identified 24-year-old Xavier Slater and 37-year-old Lucious Brown as the suspects in his death.

The sheriff’s office said Slater was arrested in January 2024 for the “callous crime.” Brown, already in jail on an attempted armed robbery charge, will now face additional murder and arson charges.

“No matter how many days, weeks, months or years pass, our detectives do not give up on getting the answers victims’ loved ones deserve,” JSO said. “We won’t stop until justice is served for Mack’s family.”
