The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says the two people who were on the ground were bleeding when the officer showed up, and that they’re expected to be OK.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man was shot and killed by a Jacksonville sheriff’s officer Friday night for failing to comply with an officer’s commands while holding two knives up in front of two people who were on the ground, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

JSO Chief Alan Parker said Officer Delong Zheng #79056 was patrolling in the area of Jillian Drive when the sheriff’s office received a call about a fight that happened on the street.

Parker said Zheng was the first officer who showed up to the incident, which happened in the 4200 block of Jillian Drive. When he arrived at approximately 7:09 p.m., Parker said he got out of his patrol car, went in between two houses where he heard yelling, and saw a “middle-aged” man on the ground bleeding, with an “older” woman on top of him also bleeding.

Parker noted another “individual” was standing to the left of Zheng, and that there was a blood “all over” a fence.

The man who was fatally shot then held two knives up in front of the man and woman who were on the ground, according to Parker.

Parker said the man who had the knives then refused to comply with Zheng’s commands to drop them.

Although JSO did not release the suspect’s name due to his family not yet being notified about his death, the agency said he was 58 years old.

“We find out that he’d been drinking all day,” Parker said about the man.

After Zheng gave the man who had the knives more commands to drop them, he didn’t comply, according to Parker. The man had been holding both knives in his left hand, but then switched to having one in each hand at this time, Parker said.

“As he pulls them both up, he goes back and gets within just a couple feet of these two people to attack them again, and the officer engages and shoots him,” Parker said.

According to Parker, the man then fell to the ground, Zheng held him at gunpoint until other officers arrived, and then he was given medical treatment by officers.

Members of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department later responded to the scene and took the man to a local hospital where he died, Parker said.

The man and woman who were on the ground are expected to “be OK,” according to Parker, who added that it is unclear the relationship the two have with the suspect.

Parker said the fight “caused a lot of commotion” in the neighborhood, and said the shooting was Zheng’s first officer-involved shooting he’s been a part of.

Zheng has been with JSO for seven years and is now placed on administrative leave, as is standard protocol, according to Parker.

JSO said the State Attorney’s Office is investigating the shooting.

The shooting marks as JSO’s seventh officer-involved shooting for 2025, Parker said.
