I-295 wrong way crash suspect in Jacksonville arrested, JSO says

Rodney Wesley, 20, was arrested Thursday after running away from Jacksonville sheriff’s detectives, according to JSO. The I-295 crash left a 66-year-old man dead.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man Florida Highway Patrol says caused the deadly Interstate 295 wrong-way, hit-and-run crash on Feb. 4 has been arrested.

Rodney Wesley, 20, was arrested on Thursday, Feb. 6, according to his arrest report, and remained in custody Tuesday. He faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving death, vehicular homicide and two counts of attempted carjacking related to the crash.

On the day of Wesley’s arrest, the report states the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Gang Unit and Community Problem Response Unit were searching for Wesley due to him having multiple active arrest warrants.

Detectives spotted Wesley riding a bike westbound in the 8300 block of Susie Street, according to the report. When they attempted to stop him, JSO says he “looked directly” at a detective’s police vehicle and swerved around it.

“Other CPR and Gang Detectives were in the area also attempting to stop the suspect, however he continued to flee westbound,” the report states. 

The suspect’s path was blocked, causing him to get off the bicycle. He then began to run on foot southbound in the 8400 block of Susie Street, according to the report.

JSO said in the report that Wesley then cut through the backyard of a home on Osteen Street, as he was eventually caught hiding behind a shed by a JSO K-9.

Wesley was eventually brought into custody by two JSO detectives, and treated on scene for a dog bite.
