In Jacksonville, Florida, the trial of Mario Fernandez-Saldana has officially commenced with jury selection as the first order of business. Fernandez-Saldana stands accused in connection with the murder of Jared Bridegan, a case that has captured public attention.
Jared Bridegan, a father of four, fell victim to a tragic gunning down back in 2022. Investigators assert that Fernandez-Saldana, alongside Bridegan’s ex-wife Shanna Gardner, concocted a nefarious ‘murder-for-hire plot’ to orchestrate Bridegan’s untimely demise.
The crucial phase of jury selection kicked off on Monday, drawing 100 potential jurors into the courtroom. Fernandez-Saldana, clad in a suit, was present and courteously greeted the arriving jurors, though he abstained from engaging in further discourse.
These jurors faced division into two distinct groups. Group One comprised individuals who encountered either scheduling conflicts, personal hardships, or prior exposure to the case’s details. Within a private setting, these jurors were interviewed by Judge London Kite, attorneys, and Fernandez-Saldana. Initially, the media, including representatives from First Coast News, were barred from the room. However, an intervention by First Coast News led to a successful legal challenge allowing journalistic presence during the proceedings.
Inside this chamber, jurors were thoroughly questioned regarding their conflicts of interest and any pre-existing knowledge of the case. Jurors who admitted prior knowledge were scrutinized for their ability to remain impartial. This led to the excusal of several candidates due to their prior acquaintance with the case details.
Those who were retained were asked to fill out a questionnaire. They will report back to court on Wednesday to begin Phase Two of the jury selection process.
