Justice Versus Pink: Controversy Erupts in Trial of Accused Rapist of Slain LSU Student Madison Brooks

In an unusual legal maneuver, one of the three defendants accused of assaulting a young woman prior to her death aims to restrict her loved ones from wearing pink during the upcoming court proceedings.

Nineteen-year-old Madison Brooks, a vibrant student enrolled at Louisiana State University, tragically lost her life when she was struck by a car on a Baton Rouge highway. This incident occurred in 2023 shortly after a group of men allegedly raped her and then abandoned her on the road. The motorist involved remained at the crash site and was subsequently absolved of any wrongdoing.

Flash forward three years, and Desmond Carter, one of the individuals charged in the assault, is preparing to stand trial later this month.

Prosecutors contend that after a night spent drinking at a local establishment, Carter, Kaivon Washington, and Casen Carver sexually assaulted Brooks inside their car. All three men are now facing serious rape charges as the case prepares to unfold in court.

According local outlet WBRZ, Carter’s defense team filed a motion looking to prohibit pink attire and clothing with supportive messages, arguing it could unfairly influence or intimidate the jury.

The defense referenced Supreme Court cases “Sheppard v. Maxwell” and “Estes v. Texas” concerning media-driven “carnival atmospheres” and procedural fairness to argue that spectator displays compromise Carter’s right to a fair trial.

The prosecution opposed the motion, characterizing the pink clothing as victim advocacy rather than jury intimidation.
