Kathy Bates rips speech after losing at Golden Globes 2025

Kathy Bates had the perfect reaction to her 2025 Golden Globes loss.

The 76-year-old star of “Matlock” tore up a piece of paper believed to contain her acceptance speech after losing the Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama award to Anna Sawai from “Shogun.”

Bates clapped after Sawai’s name was called — and then she stared right at the camera and destroyed the paper.

Anna Sawai, 32, won the category, which also featured nominees Emma D’Arcy from “House of the Dragon,” Keira Knightley from “Black Doves,” Keri Russell from “The Diplomat,” and Maya Erskine from “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”

Russell, 48, was happy that she didn’t win the award. She mouthed “thank you, oh thank you” to the person sitting next to her.

During her speech, Sawai graciously gave Bates a shoutout.

In her brief acceptance speech, Sawai expressed gratitude to the voters for choosing her and humorously mentioned that she would vote for Kathy Bates instead, eliciting laughter from the audience.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight after the show, Sawai admitted she was unsure she would win her category.

“I was just thinking that I’m so happy for whoever is gonna get it. I was getting a little bit nervous, but I think I was more nervous once my name was called cause then I had to make a speech,” she said.

Sunday’s ceremony marked Bates’ 9th time as a Golden Globe nominee. She previously won at the ceremony in 1990 and 1996 for her roles in the psychological horror film “Misery” and the made-for-TV biographical film “The Late Shift,” respectively.

Last year, Bates said that she was planning to retire from Hollywood after the “Matlock” reboot series, which has been a huge hit for CBS.

However, Bates has since clarified that she’s not done acting just yet.

“I think people got confused and thought I was going to retire,” she told PEOPLE in October. “What I meant was, how can it get any better? I would love for this to keep going.”

She added about getting the “Matlock” role, “I remember calling my agents and saying, ‘I think maybe I want to go into, if not retirement, semi-retirement. If I can’t afford to keep my house, I’ll sell it and maybe go to New York. Then this happened. I couldn’t believe it.”

The new “Matlock” is inspired by the original series starring Andy Griffith, but with a gender flipped lead character. The show has already been renewed for Season 2.
