What do we know about the attack?
Authorities have identified Cole Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California, as the individual who allegedly stormed a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday, armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.
Allen was subdued by agents following a brief but alarming shootout in the hotel lobby.
During the incident, a Secret Service agent was hit by gunfire but, fortunately, was protected by a bulletproof vest, avoiding any serious harm. Witnesses reported that up to eight shots were exchanged.
Despite the swift response from security personnel, Allen managed to get alarmingly close, within 100 yards, to President Trump and numerous high-ranking officials.
In the midst of the chaos, President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance were quickly escorted off the ballroom stage as the Secret Service engaged with the attacker.
