King Charles privately congratulates Donald Trump on his inauguration, praises 'special relationship'

King Charles III has sent a personal message of congratulations to President Donald Trump on his inauguration, the palace has confirmed.

The monarch, 76, sent a handwritten letter to the 47th president as he reflected on the “enduring special relationship between the UK and US.”

According to Buckingham Palace, Charles’ personal message was conveyed to Trump on Monday, congratulating him on his second inauguration.

While there are currently no plans in the diary for a UK state visit for Trump, it’s understood that options remain possible for one to be arranged for later in the year.

Typically, foreign political figures and monarchs are invited to the UK on the advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, with the decision down to the UK government.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Trump did choose to visit the UK in the near future.

The POTUS, 78, has a strong affinity for the British royals, and recently linked up with Prince William during a visit to the newly reopened Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris last month.

Trump previously said he had “automatic chemistry” with the late Queen Elizabeth II, whom he had met during his first term in the White House.

He had also praised Charles, saying the king is a “really wonderful guy.”

While it remains to be seen, King Charles and Queen Camilla may receive an invitation to Washington, DC next year to attend the 250th anniversary of the signing of the US Declaration of Independence.

It came just hours after UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer extended his congratulations to Trump.

“On behalf of the United Kingdom, I send my warmest congratulations to President @realDonaldTrump on his inauguration as the forty-seventh President of the United States,” Starmer said in a statement Monday.

“The special relationship between the UK and the US will continue to flourish for years to come.”

In a follow-up statement, the UK Prime Minister said the pair “have spoken about the need to deepen and invest in the transatlantic relationship.”

“With President Trump’s longstanding affection and historical ties to the United Kingdom, I know that depth of friendship will continue,” he added.
