Sen. Amy Klobuchar, the Democratic candidate for Minnesota governor, commended law enforcement Wednesday after the FBI arrested an 18-year-old accused of plotting an ISIS-inspired mass shooting at the Mall of America.
“I’m grateful for the heroic work of law enforcement that prevented a mass shooting and terrorist attack at the Mall of America,” Klobuchar said in a statement. She called for continued, substantial cooperation and funding for federal and local authorities to disrupt potential terrorist threats and violent crime. “Our state must take terrorism and violent crime head on, working with our federal law enforcement and local police departments to keep Minnesotans safe,” she said.
Klobuchar, who has served in the U.S. Senate since 2007, is challenging Republican Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth in the November gubernatorial election.
Her comments followed the announcement by federal officials that Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, 18, had been arrested. Investigators allege that Mohamud pledged allegiance to ISIS and discussed launching a mass shooting at the Mall of America.
Federal court documents say Mohamud allegedly spent months discussing plans for an attack. On Tuesday, authorities say, he purchased an AK-47-style rifle, four magazines and about 200 rounds of ammunition from an undercover FBI employee.

The firearm had been disabled and could not be fired, but the ammunition was live, according to the documents.
FBI Director Kash Patel said Mohamud “allegedly obtained a weapon he hoped to use in a mass casualty attack in support of ISIS, but this FBI arrested him and put a stop to his plans.”
President Donald Trump likewise praised the FBI’s work in the case during remarks to reporters Wednesday.
“I did hear about it. And they did a great job. The FBI did a great job,” Trump said.
Mohamud faces a charge of knowingly receiving a firearm and ammunition while knowing, or having reasonable cause to believe, that they would be used to commit a felony and a federal terrorism offense.
