Protesters in Los Angeles engage in confrontations with law enforcement amid the use of tear gas outside a federal building in the city’s downtown area, leading authorities to designate the situation as an unlawful assembly.

The Los Angeles Police Department said on X that protesters are throwing concrete, rocks, bottes and fireworks at officers.

An 8 p.m. citywide curfew was put in place following a turn of events during a seemingly peaceful demonstration called the “No Kings” rally that escalated into disorder Saturday afternoon, prompting the LAPD and various other enforcement agencies to take decisive action in dispersing the assembled crowds.

Video recordings captured the intense dynamics as police officers mounted on horses advanced towards the demonstrators, brandishing their batons, while additional personnel in tactical attire deployed tear gas canisters into the crowd.

“We just wanted to come and support our people and we’re getting tear gassed for it,” Melissa Bran, 28, told the Associated Press while dabbing her red eyes with a wet cloth.
