HBO’s Lanterns raised the stakes in last week’s new episode, sending Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) back into full Green Lantern mode. After suiting up in his legendary uniform, Hal blasted across the cosmos for an uneasy reunion with Thaal Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen). Though Sinestro remains imprisoned, Hal still needs his former mentor’s expertise to investigate a terrifying new danger: a living Manhunter hiding out in Rushville, Nebraska.
So far, Lanterns has leaned hard into the appeal of a prestige mystery-box drama. The HBO series is juggling split timelines, suspicious motives, buried secrets, and yes, actual mysterious boxes. At the center of it all are two major questions: Who is responsible for killing Hal Jordan in 2026? And which resident of 2016 Rushville is secretly a malevolent, shapeshifting alien?
The 2026 storyline has also spotlighted Hal’s growing discomfort with training John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), the courageous new recruit assigned as his backup. During Hal’s tense conversation with Sinestro, the imprisoned alien cuts straight to the real issue: Hal may not see John as support at all, but as a younger, stronger replacement waiting in the wings.
That leaves Lanterns with plenty of combustible questions heading into its next chapter. Can Hal Jordan and John Stewart put their friction aside long enough to become a real team? Is the Manhunter finally ready to expose itself? And will married Sheriff Kerry Kane (Kelly Macdonald) ever admit that the chemistry between her and Hal is impossible to ignore?
