LAKE CITY, Fla. — The death of an 8-year-old girl brought the community in Lake City together to celebrate her life on Sunday.
The family of Lauren Peterson says she was killed in a hit-and-run crash while riding her bike Friday.
Hundreds gathered in Lake City to say goodbye to Peterson, whose father said she was full of life.
“I miss her,” said Peterson’s uncle Michael Smith. “I wish I could bring her back. I wish she could be here with us right now.”
Smith couldn’t believe the news that he’d never see his niece again.
According to a report from Florida Highway Patrol, Peterson was riding her bike near Highway 90 when a car hit her and kept driving.
“She was an inspiration,” said Smith. “She was the best person. She did a lot for us. Look at how many people she brought together here.”
Hundreds filled the street where Peterson lived, dressed in her favorite colors, purple and white to honor her.
Peterson’s father didn’t want to be interviewed but said his daughter loved dancing and cheerleading, and she was full of life.
“We’re missing her,” said Smith. “We love her. Shout out Lo. I love you, baby. Shoutout.”
Hundreds of people surrounded the family, offering prayers, hugs and tears.
Florida Highway Patrol reports a driver is in custody.
