Are the 'lazy luxury' sneakers taking Wall Street by storm worth it?

Step aside, Gucci and Loro Piana—there’s a new shoe in the spotlight, gaining a reputation as the go-to footwear for private jet-setters.

The Zegna Triple Stitch shoes, priced at $1,100, have captured the attention of the affluent elite. Recently, they have been seen gracing the feet of prominent figures such as Apple CEO Tim Cook and CNBC Host Andrew Ross Sorkin.

Their appeal extends to Hollywood as well, where stars like Hugh Jackman, Kieran Culkin, and Nicolas Cage have donned them on the red carpet.

These slip-on shoes exude a laid-back yet sophisticated style, available in both soft leather and suede options.

With a range of colors to complement any executive wardrobe, the brand offers these sneakers in classic black and white, as well as various shades of tan, blue, and brown.

But perhaps what’s most intriguing about these shoes is the fact that they have no label, a true symbol of the ‘quiet luxury’ trend that became popular a few years ago.

If you know, you know – and that’s the whole point, according to Dr. David Loranger, PhD, and associate professor of fashion marketing and merchandising at Sacred Heart University.

‘These shoes play right into the styling,’ Loranger told the Daily Mail exclusively. ‘No one knows what it is, unless they are “in the know.”‘

Not to mention, they're also a hit with celebrities in Tinseltown, too, as they've been sported on red carpets by actors Hugh Jackman (seen above), Kieran Culkin, and Nicolas Cage

He explained that the shoe’s popularity can also be attributed to certain cultural aspects.

‘Another factor is cultural, since the influence of tech corporate culture has seemed to have permeated many once-conservative sectors such as finance, and senior-level executives are now coming from the millennial generation, which has much different, more casual standards for work dress,’ Loranger explained.

Lucky enough for us, the Daily Mail was able to put the shoes to the test.

The Daily Mail hit Wall Street in New York City to see how they would do with all the finance bros over in that neck of the woods – and the footwear received mixed reactions.

One tester remarked that the shoes were so comfortable that they felt like wearing a pair of slippers, and branded them as ‘Crocs with a trust fund.’

Another passerby named Dan was so taken by them that they guessed the pair was worth $3,000.

‘They’re nice looking,’ Dan told the Daily Mail. It’s so humble, there’s no brand.

‘It’s like Mark Zuckerberg’s one thousand dollar t-shirts,’ he noted – echoing some of the same points that Loranger told us.

Another passerby, however, didn’t think they were worth the money.

‘The shoes better be the greatest things ever in the world for me to spend over $100 on a pair of shoes,’ he said.

Once we revealed the price to him, he couldn’t believe it.

‘I’d fly overseas and buy them from the factory and save myself some money from that,’ he joked.

‘I’m not gonna pay $1,100 for shoes, however, you’re talking about people who have private jets, so that’s probably like a cup of coffee for them, so I get it.’

Fashion stylist Liz Teich, who is known online as @thenewyorkstylist, believes that the wealthy are attracted to these shoes due to their sheer comfort.

‘I think it’s a great hybrid of a dress shoe and a sneaker and makes sense that Wall Street bros and CEO’s are flocking to this style because they can be comfortable and pass as dressy enough to wear with a suit,’ Teich told the Daily Mail exclusively.

Loranger compared the Zegna loafers to that of Tod’s, another luxury brand where loafers are sold for a similar price.

‘The Tod’s loafer became a captain of industry fave when it was featured in the series Succession, which was part of the genesis of the quiet luxury trend,’ Loranger explained.

‘So, as people see influentials like Tim Cook in these shoes, the demand will continue to build.’

And according to the professor, the Zegna Triple Stitch shoes are here to stay.

‘Shoes like these have been around for years, and I don’t see them going away,’ he shared with the Daily Mail.

‘Zegna is really tapping into a market that Mephisto and Ecco developed, except they are doing it at a higher level of materials and price point for a more affluent customer,’ Loranger continued.

‘It seems that Zegna has seen the success that Tod’s, Cucinelli, & Loro Piana have had for years with casual styles at a luxury price point, and they want in on the action.’

However, if you’re looking for a cheaper option, Teich flagged some alternatives.

‘Both Cole Haan and Oliver Clabell have a spot on, for lack of a better word, dupe for the Zegna for less than $200 and also with Italian leather,’ Teich told the Daily Mail.

‘Unless you’re a Wall Street bro and have other guys comparing notes on shoes, I’d go with one of these. ‘
