LEEDS, Ala. (TRIBUNE) — A routine traffic stop in Leeds took an unexpected twist when a woman intervened in an attempt to disrupt the officer’s duties.

On January 14, Leeds Police officers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle situated in the 7300 block of President Street. According to a statement released on Friday, the driver was identified as Jacob Garcia Martinez, a 41-year-old Birmingham resident. During the stop, officers discovered that Martinez was in possession of methamphetamine and a stolen handgun.

Further investigation revealed that Martinez was also unlawfully residing in the United States, adding another layer to the case.

The situation took a dramatic turn when Mary Lisa Everling, a 61-year-old from Leeds, drove to the scene. Police allege she blocked the roadway with her vehicle, repeatedly honked her horn, and interfered with the ongoing investigation by ignoring lawful commands.

As a result of her actions, Everling was arrested and charged with obstructing governmental operations, as noted in the statement from the Leeds Police Department.

Police said Martinez was taken into custody without further incident and charged with certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm, receiving stolen property, obstructing justice using a false ID, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is currently incarcerated in the Jefferson County Jail with a total bond of $55,000. Upon Martinez’s release, he will be transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s custody.
