In a swipe at Southwest, Frontier offers free checked bags for limited time

(NEXSTAR) Last week, Southwest Airlines ruffled some air travelers’ feathers after announcing the end of its “Bags Fly Free” policy after more than 50 years. A fellow airline is doing the opposite, hoping to entice you to “divorce” your current flying company.

Frontier Airlines announced on Tuesday that it would fly your bags for free on select flights in an effort to be your “rebound” if you’ve been scarred by the end of Southwest’s policy.

Here’s how it works.

You have to book a nonstop flight starting today and running through Aug. 18. This will secure you the Economy Bundle, which includes a free carry-on bag, free seat selection and free flight changes. To also earn one free checked bag, your flight will need to depart between May 28 and Aug. 18 and be booked with the promo code FREEBAG.

According to the budget airline, this offer is only available on bookings completed by Monday, March 24.

“We’ve always had heart,” Frontier CEO Barry Biffle said in a press release. “Some airlines are walking away from what travelers love, but we’re running towards it. Think of this as the ultimate ‘divorce your old airline’ deal. If travelers show us the love, we’ll make these perks permanent.”

Last year, Frontier announced several new perks set to arrive in 2025. That includes first-class seating, an option it has never offered before. Some of its members have also gained access to complimentary upgrades (which will eventually include first-class seating) and unlimited companion travel.

These new perks came on the heels of Frontier’s “New Frontier” initiative, aimed at making pricing more transparent, dropping fees for changes or cancellations, and improving customer support options.
