The stores will be reopening months after Big Lots struck a deal to save hundreds of stores from closing. The new owners say there’ll be more locations to come.

WASHINGTON — Big Lots is making a bit of a comeback as its new owners have announced a list of stores that will reopen this week.

Variety Wholesalers, which acquired over 200 Big Lot stores as part of a deal last December, announced it will reopen nine stores in six states on Thursday, April 10.

“We’re thrilled to bring the Big Lots! brand back to life by offering more deals than ever, lots of famous brands and a new apparel department for the entire family,” Lisa Seigies, president and CEO of Variety Wholesalers, said in a press release. “We’re opening stores quickly so we can serve the community. We know the stores won’t be perfect to start, but each week we’ll add more new products as we build towards the grand opening celebration in the fall.”

The company said that the remaining locations will reopen in waves, with the second chunk of stores — roughly 55 stores — reopening on May 1.

Additionally, more stores are expected to open through early June and in the months leading up to a “grand celebration” in the fall, the company said.

Variety Wholesaler shared that it plans to reopen Big Lot stores in North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, West Virginia as well as other states.

Big Lots filed for bankruptcy in 2024 and closed more than 400 stores last year. The retailer, which mostly sells furniture, home decor and some other items, previously said high inflation and interest rates have hurt its business as consumers have pulled back on their home and seasonal product purchases, two categories the chain depended on for a significant part of its revenue.
