Diego Martinez, 45, is being sentenced for causing the Oct. 3, 2024 crash 25-year-old Gabe Di Spirito and his friend died in.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man is currently being sentenced Friday afternoon for causing a crash on Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville that killed two motorcyclists.

Diego Martinez, 45, is being sentenced for causing the Oct. 3, 2024 crash Gabe Di Spirito and Joseph Woods died in. Both men were 25 years old.

Martinez is charged with two counts of driving under the influence manslaughter and two counts of driving without a driver’s license causing death or serious bodily injury.

On the day of the crash at 7:25 p.m., Florida Highway Patrol said Martinez was driving a Nissan Frontier eastbound on Beach Boulevard, approaching Washburn Road, at the same time that Di Spirito and his friend were traveling westbound on Beach.

According to FHP, the collision happened when Martinez “initiated a left turn in the path of the two motorcycles,” causing Di Spirito and his friend to collide into Martinez’s Nissan.

FHP said Di Spirito and his friend, who was also 25 years old, both died at the scene.

The crash caused all westbound lanes of Beach to shut down from San Pablo Road to Hodges Boulevard.

First Coast News previously reported that on the night of the crash, Di Spirito’s family was waiting for him just a few blocks away from where the incident happened.

“We heard a big boom and right there and then my husband said, ‘That’s my son, that’s my son,'” said Belinda Di Spirito, Di Spirito’s mother. “My son was just lying there and I screamed and I was panicking. I was screaming. I was frantic. We were right there when this happened.”

Belinda told First Coast News it was a nightmare her family had already lived before prior to Gabe’s death.

“We lost his older brother, Colby, two and a half years ago and he had an incident with a motorcycle as well, but it was a freak accident,” Belinda said.

Victim impact statements

The following are victim impact statements family and friends of Di Spirito and Woods read to the court during Martinez’s sentencing hearing:

“Seeing my mother in constant pain, seeing my father distraught and in disbelief, this pain and suffering are immeasurable,” said Di Spirito’s older brother.

“His death has ripped apart our lives and has profoundly impacted our entire community,” said Di Spirito’s mother, Belinda. “Our beautiful, bright boy was stolen from us in the most callous manner imaginable. Gabe embodied kindness, determination and an uplifting spirit that touched everyone around him.”
